Featured Artist Jonathan Drake
I would like to introduce to you artist Jonathan Drake of Helena MT, who also happens to be my nephew. Jonathan is a dedicated painter and has been producing paintings that are too many to count. He can be found in the basement of his home letting paint ebb and flow over canvases creating colorful landscapes that evoke the viewers sense of imagination and wonder. It has been fun to have another artist to collaborate with and one who likes to talk about paints, canvases, mediums, brushes and the importance of art in human history and daily life.
Jonathan and I both have August birthdays and we thought it would be fun to share our abstract paintings with you during this month. We hope you will take some time to enjoy the colors, patterns and shapes that are created by this free flowing painting process. Now a word from Jonathan about his work.
These paintings are intended, not to express a particular idea, but to escape the realm of language and analysis. With my painting I am trying to create a kind of wilderness for myself that acts as a refuge from culture. These works are entirely abstract, so by focusing on the purely formal aspects of color, shape, line etc. I can step out of myself for a while and work outside the dimension of “meaning”. The process of these paintings aids this goal by striking a balance between chaos and control – the fluidity of the paint naturally offers forms which can easily be overworked. The difference between a failed painting and a successful one can be knowing when to step back and relinquish control. I hope these fluid forms and colors offer a similar reprieve for the viewer.
